Its lyrics describe a woman reflecting on the dawn of a new day without her beloved in her arms. Ombra mai fu -  "Ombra mai fu," meaning "Never was a shade," is an aria from George Frideric Handel's opera "Serse" (Xerxes). It's the opening aria of the opera, and it depicts King Xerxes of Persia expressing his admiration for a beloved plane tree in his garden.
